The EVAP system (short for Evaporative Emission Control System) is an emission-reducing system in vehicles that has been specially developed to control the evaporation of fuel vapours and prevent their release into the atmosphere. These vapours consist of hydrocarbons that are produced during the evaporation of petrol in the fuel tank. The EVAP system captures these vapours and later feeds them to the engine for combustion.

Main components of the EVAP system

  1. Fuel tank: This is where the evaporation gases are produced, which must be collected.
  2. Activated charcoal filter (charcoal canister)The activated carbon filter stores the rising vapours from the fuel tank. The activated carbon can absorb the hydrocarbon vapours and retain them until they can be fed into the engine.
  3. Purge valve (bleed valve)This valve controls the release of the stored vapours. Under certain conditions (e.g. when the engine is running), the valve is opened so that the vapours enter the combustion chamber via the engine intake and are burned there.
  4. Pressure sensors and control unitModern vehicles have sensors that monitor the pressure and tightness of the EVAP system. The control unit registers any leaks or malfunctions and can issue an error message (e.g. via the engine indicator light).

How the EVAP system works

  • Storing the vapoursAs soon as fuel evaporates in the tank, the vapours rise and are collected in the activated carbon filter.
  • Release for incinerationWhen the engine is running, the purge valve opens under controlled conditions and the vapours enter the engine for combustion. In this way, the fuel is utilised efficiently instead of escaping into the environment.
  • MonitoringA sealed system is crucial for functionality. Sensors constantly monitor the status of the EVAP system and issue an error message in the event of a leak or malfunction.

Possible problems

Frequent problems in the EVAP system are caused by

  • Defective valves or leaksA leaking fuel filler cap or damaged lines in the EVAP system can affect the system pressure and trigger an error message.
  • Clogged activated charcoal filter: In older vehicles, the activated charcoal filter may wear out or become blocked so that it can no longer store the vapours effectively.
  • Electronic errorsFailure of the control unit or faulty sensors can trigger error messages.
