Ignition cables need to be replaced because they wear out over time and can no longer perform their function reliably. The most common reasons are
- Ageing and material fatigue
Ignition cables usually consist of a conductive core, insulation and sheathing. Over time, these materials become brittle, cracked or porous.
Heat, cold, oil, moisture and engine vibrations accelerate the ageing process. - Electrical resistance increases
The internal resistance of the cables can increase over time.
As a result, less voltage is applied to the spark plug, which leads to misfiring, loss of power or poor starting behavior. - Insulation fault
Cracks or damage to the insulation can cause the spark to "jump over" (so-called leakage current) before it reaches the spark plug.
This causes misfiring or uneven engine running. - Corrosion on the plugs
The metal contacts at the ends of the cables can oxidize or corrode, especially in damp conditions, which impairs the electrical connection to the ignition coil or spark plug. - Influence on other components
Bad ignition cables can overload ignition coils, which shortens their service life.
The catalytic converter can also be damaged by unburned fuel (in the event of misfiring).
Symptoms of defective ignition cables are
- Engine judder
- Poor cold start
- Power loss
- Increased fuel consumption
- Misfires
