The V-belt is a long rubber belt that runs along the engine of your vehicle and drives many important components such as the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning and water pump
For most vehicles, it is recommended to have the V-belt checked once the vehicle has reached 60,000 kilometres.
It is also important to carry out visual and audible inspections for wear before reaching this mileage.
On most vehicles, it is recommended to replace the V-belt at 90 kilometres (regardless of its appearance) to reduce the risk of a broken one. A broken V-belt can be dangerous to drive and cause severe damage to the engine.
Symptoms of a defective V-belt
- Rib detachment (one or more ribs have detached from the belt body).
- Rib or belt wear
- Cracks in the longitudinal direction of the belt (cracks between two ribs)
- Belt slides
- "groove jump" (the belt does not hold the correct position on the pulley).
- Broken belt (note: identify and rectify problem before installing a new belt).
- Noise (an unpleasant squeak, squeal or rumble is heard or felt while the drive belt is in operation).
If there is contamination from oil or coolant on the V-belt, the belt should also be replaced and the leaks eliminated.
