The EVAP system (short for Evaporative Emission Control System ) is an emissions control system in vehicles specifically designed to control the evaporation of fuel vapors and prevent their release into the atmosphere. These vapors consist of hydrocarbons that are created when gasoline evaporates in the fuel tank. The EVAP system captures these fumes and later feeds them into the engine for combustion.

Main components of the EVAP system

  1. Fuel tank : This is where the evaporation gases are created and must be captured.
  2. Activated carbon filter (charcoal canister) : The activated carbon filter stores the rising vapors from the fuel tank. The activated carbon can absorb the hydrocarbon vapors and hold them until they can be fed into the engine.
  3. Purge Valve : This valve controls the release of stored vapors. Under certain conditions (e.g. when the engine is running), the valve is opened so that the vapors pass through the engine's intake into the combustion chamber and are burned there.
  4. Pressure sensors and control unit : Modern vehicles have sensors that monitor the pressure and leaks of the EVAP system. The control unit registers any leaks or malfunctions and can issue an error message (e.g. via the engine control light).

How the EVAP system works

  • Storing the vapors : As soon as fuel evaporates in the tank, the vapors rise and are collected in the activated carbon filter.
  • Release for Combustion : When the engine is running, the purge valve opens under controlled conditions and the vapors enter the engine for combustion. This means the fuel is used efficiently instead of escaping into the environment.
  • Monitoring : A locked system is crucial for functionality. Sensors constantly monitor the condition of the EVAP system and issue an error message in the event of a leak or malfunction.

Possible problems

Common problems in the EVAP system arise from:

  • Broken valves or leaks : A leaky gas cap or damaged lines in the EVAP system can affect system pressure and trigger an error message.
  • Clogged charcoal filter : On older vehicles, the charcoal filter can become worn or clogged, preventing it from effectively retaining fumes.
  • Electronic errors : A failure of the control unit or faulty sensors can trigger error messages.

  • P0448 : EVAP Vent Valve Control Circuit - Short Circuit
  • P0449 : EVAP system vent/solenoid circuit
  • P0450 : EVAP system pressure sensor/switch
  • P0451 : EVAP System Pressure Sensor/Switch – Range/Performance
  • P0452 : EVAP Pressure Sensor Circuit - Low Voltage
  • P0453 : EVAP Pressure Sensor Circuit - Over Voltage
  • P0454 : EVAP System Pressure Sensor/Switch – Intermittent
  • P0455 : EVAP Leak Monitor – Large Leak Detected
  • P0456 : EVAP Leak Monitor - Small leak (0.020 inch) detected
  • P0457 : EVAP leak detected (tank cap loose/off)
  • P0458 : EVAP System Control Valve Circuit – Low
  • P0459 : EVAP System Control Valve Circuit – High
