The lambda sensor is an important component in modern exhaust systems that is used to control and regulate the fuel-air mixture in internal combustion engines to ensure the most efficient and environmentally friendly combustion possible.

The lambda sensor measures the oxygen content in the engine's exhaust gas flow. From this you can determine whether the fuel-air mixture is “rich” (too much fuel, too little air) or “lean” (too much air, too little fuel). The goal is an ideal mixing ratio in which the oxygen content in the exhaust system and the amount of fuel injected match each other optimally.

The probe generates an electrical voltage that changes depending on the oxygen content in the exhaust gas. This voltage is transmitted to the engine control unit, which then adjusts the injection quantity and air supply to optimize the ratio.

If the lambda sensor is defective or works incorrectly, this can lead to several problems:

  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Loss of engine power
  • Increased pollutant emissions
  • Error display in the on-board computer

A common symptom of a defect is a persistently incorrect mixture, either too rich or too lean. Modern vehicles usually detect lambda sensor problems automatically and display them via the engine warning light.

Common error codes for a defective lambda sensor are: P0036, P0054, P0056, P0060, P0137, P0138, P013A, P013B, P014A, P014B, P0157, P0158, P0160, P0161, P0420, P0430, P2270, P2271, P2272, P2273, P2096, P2097, P2098, P2099
