The O2 sensor or lambda sensor is an important component in modern exhaust systems that is used to control and regulate the fuel-air mixture in combustion engines in order to ensure the most efficient and environmentally friendly combustion possible.
The O2 sensor measures the oxygen content in the engine's exhaust gas flow. This can be used to determine whether the fuel-air mixture is "rich" (too much fuel, too little air) or "lean" (too much air, too little fuel). The aim is to achieve an ideal mixing ratio in which the proportion of oxygen in the exhaust system and the amount of fuel injected are optimally matched.
The sensor generates an electrical voltage that changes depending on the oxygen content in the exhaust gas. This voltage is transmitted to the engine control unit, which then adjusts the injection quantity and air supply in order to optimise the ratio.
If the lambda sensor is defective or working incorrectly, this can lead to several problems:
- Increased fuel consumption
- Engine power loss
- Increased pollutant emissions
- Error display in the on-board computer
A common symptom of a defect is a permanently incorrect mixture that is either too rich or too lean. Modern vehicles usually recognise lambda sensor problems automatically and display them via the engine warning light.
Common fault codes for a defective lambda sensor are: P0036, P0054, P0056, P0060, P0137, P0138, P013A, P013B, P014A, P014B, P0157, P0158, P0160, P0161, P0420, P0430, P2270, P2271, P2272, P2273, P2096, P2097, P2098, P2099
