The V-belt is a long rubber belt that runs along the engine of your vehicle and drives many important components such as the alternator, the power steering pump, the air conditioning system and the water pump

For most vehicles, it is recommended to have the V-belt checked as soon as the vehicle has reached 60,000 kilometers.
It is also important to carry out visual and acoustic inspections for wear before reaching this mileage.

On most vehicles, it is recommended to replace the V-belt at 90 kilometers (regardless of its appearance) to reduce the risk of a breakage. A broken V-belt can be dangerous when driving and can cause serious damage to the engine.

Symptoms of a defective V-belt

  • Rib detachment (one or more ribs have detached from the belt body)
  • Rib or belt wear
  • Cracks in the longitudinal direction of the belt (cracks between two ribs)
  • Belt slides
  • "Groove jump" (the belt does not maintain the correct position on the pulley)
  • Belt breakage (note: identify and rectify the problem before installing a new belt)
  • Noises (an unpleasant squeaking, squealing or rumbling can be heard or felt while the drive belt is in operation)

If oil or coolant contamination is visible on the V-belt, the belt should also be replaced and the leaks eliminated.
